Crossing Over and Recombination
Crossing over occurs during Prophase I. Two chromosomes pair up and exchange DNA allowing for genetic diversity between parents.
Independent Assortment is a process unique to meiosis and occurs in Metaphase I.
Meiotic Nondisjunction Events
- A failure of chromosomes/chromatids to separate during cell division. There are three different types:
- Homologous chromosomes fail to separate in meiosis I
- Sister chromatids fail to separate in meiosis II
- Sister chromatids fail to separate in mitosis
